A microsurgery on a rare brain tumor (fourth ventricle) has been performed successfully on an Afghan young man. On Monday, October 21, 2019, seven hours of surgery on a rare brain tumor on an Afghan young man was performed successfully on Razi Hospital, in Birjand.

Dr Kazem Qaemi, neurosurgeon and faculty member of Birjand University of medical sciences described the procedure of this surgery as follow:
"A 36-year-old man, from Farah province in Afghanistan, had undergone a shunt surgery about five months ago in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan; Then he visited me to undergo a surgery on a tumor located in fourth ventricle of his brain. Since, surgery rooms of Razi hospital are fully equipped with advanced devices, the decision was made to perform a microsurgery on this patient".

This was a rare tumor and the major reason that made it dangerous was its location; cardiac arrest was a possible result during the surgery. Fortunately, by utilizing the facilities in the operation room, having skilled staffs, and experienced anesthesia care team, this seven hours of surgical procedure was performed successfully. After 24 hours, the patient was hospitalized in ICU ward of the hospital, having no new symptoms affecting nervous system of the patient and now, his condition is stabilized.

Since there is advanced surgical equipment to perform microsurgery for conditions of the brain and spine, and also hospital costs are lower than other countries, therefore, these conditions enable morepatients from neighboring countries to come here to receive medical care.
