WHO study lists top endemic pathogens for which new vaccines are urgently needed
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a list of widespread diseases caused by certain pathogens that urgently require new vaccines. These pathogens are considered endemic, meaning they are consistently present in specific regions and pose significant health risks. The study emphasizes the need for more effective vaccination options to combat these diseases and improve global health outcomes.
1. Pathogens needing vaccine research:
- Group A streptococcus
- Hepatitis C virus
- HIV-1
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
2. Pathogens with vaccines that require further development:
- Cytomegalovirus
- Influenza virus (for broad protection)
- Leishmania species
- Non-typhoidal Salmonella
- Norovirus
- Plasmodium falciparum (malaria)
- Shigella species
- Staphylococcus aureus
3. Pathogens with vaccines nearing approval or introduction:
- Dengue virus
- Group B streptococcus
- Extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
