This school was founded in 1985 with the collaboration of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, and in 1988, it admitted medical students independently for the first time. The school of medicine is now the most important school in Birjand University of Medical Sciences which admits students in different fields including medicine, immunology, anatomy, biochemistry and microbiology (Master’s level), molecular medicine (PhD), as well as residency of clinical specialties including internal diseases, pediatrics, anesthesiology, general surgery, radiology and in the near future, cardiology and neurosurgery). The school building has an area of 7000 square meters and is equipped with 7 training laboratories as well as 16 classrooms that are equipped with full audio-visual facilities and clinical skills unit. As for the administrative structure, it is comprised of the dean, three deputies, and three educational hospitals. At present, the number of faculty members is 113 including 34 PhD holders in basic sciences and 79 medical specialists and subspecialists in different clinical fields who participate in both education and research.
