Birjand University of Medical Sciences (BUMS) is a leading institution in medical education and research, situated in Birjand, South Khorasan Province, Iran. Established in 1985, the university has been serving the healthcare needs of eastern Iran for nearly four decades. Currently, around 3,900 students are enrolled in various programs, with a total of 65 fields of study offered. BUMS specializes in healthcare sciences, including medicine and dentistry, and consists of several schools and faculties, such as the Faculty of Health, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Paramedical Sciences, and Faculty of Pharmacy, among others. The university has five research centers: the Cardiovascular Diseases Research Center, the Infectious Diseases Research Center, the Social Determinants of Health Research Center, the Cellular and Molecular Research Center, the Toxicology and Substance Abuse Research Center, and the Elderly Health Research Center.

According to the Times ranking system, the university ranks among the top research and academic institutions in medical sciences in Iran. This ranking is based on factors such as the number of highly cited domestic and international articles, international collaborations, and the organization of numerous conferences and workshops aimed at training technicians. The university holds a global ranking between 801 and 1000.
